Art of Fighting was an unprecedented show of technical force: the largest sprites seen in a fighting game at the time, dynamic camera zoom pulling in and out of the action, and visible damage on the fighters' faces as they took hits. Ryo Sakazaki and Robert Garcia sweep through South Town to rescue Yuri Sakazaki, in a story set — exquisite detail — a decade before Fatal Fury, with a young Geese Howard pulling strings from the shadows. Its great mechanical legacy is the spirit gauge: special attacks drain energy that must be recharged manually, forcing resource management mid-fight. It also introduced desperation attacks, only executable on the brink of defeat. The AES cartridge is easy to find at a fair price — a foundational piece of SNK's DNA.
